Sister Dinah Might,
If You Ask Her Right

Thirty Years

30 Years of Perpetual Indulgence

Even now, 30 years since the first Sisters roamed the earth (much like the dinosaurs), I still get asked "So what are the Sisters about anyway?" A fair question - and a question that I encourage people to ask. Unfortunately the question is quite often shouted at me in the middle of a crowded club or some other similar situation not exactly conducive to a deep conversation. Often I give my nutshell answer "We're a human rights/fundraising organization. We raise a lot of money for AIDS." People generally nod and seemed satisfied. However, the Reader's Digest version leaves me unsatisfied. Allow me to elaborate on the above question by explaining a little bit of what and why we are celebrating on our Anniversary this year:

  • 30 years of protecting the civil rights of the LGBT community

  • 30 years of leading the fight against HIV/AIDS

  • 30 years of educating the world about safer sex practices

  • 30 years of exercising the freedom of speech and expression

  • 30 years of demonstrating in protest of bigotry and hate

  • 30 years of challenging organized religion to see their own hypocrisy

  • 30 years of battling to enforce the separation of church and state

  • 30 years of fighting to improve the quality of life for our community

  • 30 years of organizing, hosting, and performing at charitable events

  • 30 years of donating money to fund HIV/AIDS charities and organizations

  • 30 years of marching in candlelight vigils in peaceful demonstrations

  • 30 years of visiting AIDS patients in hospitals and hospices

  • 30 years of volunteering to serve the homeless

  • 30 years of fighting for the rights of minorities

  • 30 years of protecting and supporting gay youth

  • 30 years of working to help raise funds and awareness for women's issues

  • 30 years of supporting the sex industry and sex-positive causes

  • 30 years of funding artists, musicians and other talented individuals

  • 30 years of donating money to underfunded grass-roots civil rights organizations

  • 30 years of donating money to LGBT youth and youth services

  • 30 years of donating money to public health organizations

  • 30 years of donating money to help feed those with HIV and the homeless

  • 30 years of being glamorous spokespersons for the LGBT community

  • 30 years of television and radio appearances speaking out on LGBT issues

  • 30 years of newspaper and magazine articles speaking out on LGBT issues

  • 30 years of getting in drag to help raise consciousness

  • 30 years of getting in drag to help raise funds for charity and those in need

  • 30 years of getting in drag to add color and life to events

  • 30 years of getting in drag because it's fun and brings smiles to people's faces

  • 30 years of loving each and every one of you, every day
